Class: teacher turned developer
Currently looking for the next quest.
I’ve been writing code for as long as I’ve been making games, because the games were the whole reason I started. I wanted to build my own worlds, so I learned how. Then I spent more than ten years teaching others to do the same.
From player to teacher
As a teacher of programming and game development, I took Sweden’s upper secondary students from “what’s a variable?” to shipping their own games. Some of them went on to win prizes at the Swedish Game Awards and LBS Game Awards.
I was nominated for Sweden’s Teacher of the Year twice, and I built several game development programs from scratch.
My favorite review still comes from a principal in Luleå. She came up to me smiling because my students were spending their breaks coding, and enjoying it.
My students would describe me as strict, demanding and funny, usually in that order. I set the bar high and then help people over it, and laughing on the way works much better than suffering.
Switching specs
After years of teaching development, I’m moving into doing it full time, and I’ve been grinding XP ever since:
- Full-stack development: I’m currently studying C#, ASP.NET and JavaScript, and building real web applications from the database all the way to the browser. This website is one of my projects.
- Game development: I’ve written my own small games in C# with MonoGame, and I’ve taken courses in C++, Unreal Engine and character creation.
- Servers and infrastructure: At home my training ground is a NAS and a RaspberryPi 5 for Docker, networking and server management.
I’m looking for teams, projects and clients where I can build things that matter. I’m also happy to take work that combines development with what I already know well: teaching, mentoring and explaining complicated things so they make sense.
What I bring to the party
I’ve played MMO's and mainly World of Warcraft since mid 90¨s, I’ve been guild leader, officer, tank, healer and DPS.
In practice that means:
- Tank: I take responsibility and stay calm when things catch fire.
- Healer: I make the people around me better. That’s ten years of teaching.
- DPS: I get things done.
- Guild leader: I can plan, organize and keep a group of very different people moving in the same direction.
When I’m logged off
I usually play anyway, mostly MMOs and survival sandbox games where I can build huge things nobody asked for.
Almost every character I’ve made has “Moon” or “Luna” in the name, because I like the moon.
When I need to clear my head, I take out my motorcycle and drive for an hour or so.
I’ve also moved a lot for work, so I’ve seen Sweden from the far south to the far north. I’m good at landing in new places and feeling at home quickly.
My long-term retirement plan is to have taught so many people to make games that I’ll never have to buy one again.
Got an interesting project, a team that needs one more player, or a problem that needs solving? Send me a message. I’m always up for a new adventure, especially one that pays for the next one.
